It's official: throwback hairstyles are trending, and the claw clip may be the most popular. It's not the only one—you're undoubtedly inundated with prom-style tendrils, tiny hair clips, and baby braids every time you open Instagram or TikTok. (I'm sure I am.) But it's the modest claw clip that's made me throw out all my glittering pins, elegant scrunchies, and pearl-encrusted everything.
Claw clips have always seemed functional to me. For as long as I can remember, my mother has worn a plain tortoiseshell one when cooking, and I used to wear one in primary school to keep my hair off of my face.It wasn't something I expected to want to wear again until a pre-COVID vacation to Tokyo, when I was browsing a dollar store. It was there: the sweetest pink clip. I bought it on the spur of the moment, thinking I'd use it to keep my hair back throughout my evening ritual.
My new claw clip didn't make it out of the home at first, but then I started seeing them everywhere. Every Insta-girl seemed to be wearing a candy-colored claw clip overnight, while more sleek versions appeared in celebrity press pictures left and right. Then it dawned on me: claw clips are now officially fashionable.
Fast forward to today, when claw clips are all the trend, and I never leave the home without one in my hair or stashed away in my purse (or sometimes clipped on my purse strap). While it excels at its primary function—holding a lot of hair in place with minimal effort—what I appreciate most about the clip is its adaptability.
Caroline Goldfarb, host of the Glowing Up podcast, coined the Brigitte Broke-dot look as my first foray into wearing a claw clip out of the house. It's just putting a bunch of hair in a half-up, cutting it, and leaving your front tendrils or bangs out. The half-up with some pieces around the front frames your face in such a gorgeous way—romantic, it's effortless, and amazingly flattering. The look instantly improves any terrible hair day and adds a touch of polish to any outfit.
On TikTok, effortless French twists secured with a claw clip are hot, while Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Hailey Bieber like a slicked-back bun with the claw clip holding it all together. It's a supermodel look from the 1990s that still feels fresh and modern. The sleekness of the bun appears put-together, but a claw clip adds an element of "oh, this old thing?" charm and effortlessness. Slick hair has never been my style, but the convenience of a clip makes it feel perfectly wearable. Plus, you can really show off a lovely clip with this style—it almost seems like you're wearing jewels in your hair.
While there are some high-end options, my favorite aspect of this trend is that the majority of clips are around $25. Believe me when I say that resurrecting them will not be a regret.
